PAINTING

82–41–M/01

Applied painting  – one of the original and oldest department of the school. The programme focuses on work with colour as a phenomenon and emphasizes the application of colour in free painting, its use in architecture and contemporary advertising. Students learn how to master traditional painting techniques, they work with watercolour, tempera, gouache, acrylic, oil painting or combined techniques. Students also experiment with monumental creation (mosaic, stained glass). Students apply the acquired knowledge and skills when designing and creating paintings, objects or exterior or interior installations. The programme encourages development of students' talent and creativity in their individual approach to commissions.

GRADUATE PROFILE

After completing their studies, graduates are able to work in a wide range of creative jobs. They can work in advertising agencies, they can become members of teams creating interior or exterior architecture, scenic painting or they can become freelance artists. A number of graduates continue their studies at colleges majoring in art or art pedagogy.

Entrance exam

Applicants must submit their application to study at the Secondary School of Applied Arts in Uherské Hradiště by November 30th.

The entrance exam consists of a general talent test and another part of the admission procedure in the department chosen by the applicant. As part of the admission procedure, in addition to the result of the applicant's talent test, the students ´ primary school grades are considered as well.

Pencil or charcoal drawing on A2 wrapping paper. Applicants need their own drawing tools and a firm, flat A2 drawing board. The drawing paper will be provided at school. The time allowance for the task is 2 hours.

COURSE EXAM

The portfolio must also be submitted in digital form in jpg format (the size of the longer side is 2000px and 72dpi) and marked with the name: surname_name_num­ber, under which the candidate is taking the exam_year of the exam.

BORIS JIRKŮ

Born in Zlín, he is a painter, sculptor, illustrator, graphic artist and a long-time teacher at the University of Applied Arts in Prague. He currently works at the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. He is the founder of the FIGURAMA project – an exhibition series of student drawings of fifteen universities from Europe and the USA. He had a significant impact on the appearance of Galerijní Street, and he also greatly influenced the form of contemporary art. He has held a number of solo exhibitions, participated in dozens of collective exhibitions and is represented in the National Gallery in Prague and in a number of other galleries and private collections here and abroad. He graduated from the Secondary School of Applied Arts in Uherské Hradiště in 1974.

PETR NIKL

Born in Zlín, he is a painter, photographer, illustrator, musician, theatre director, puppeteer as well as the co-founder of the Tvrdohlaví art group, and the winner of the Jindřich Chalupecký award. He currently lives in the Czech Republic and in New York. His artistic work is accompanied by social interest and the search for the current meaning of contemporary art. As an artist he is very versatile. He has received a number of important awards for his illustrations and author's books, including Magnesia Litera for the book of the year and for the best children book or three Prizes of the Minister of Culture for the most beautiful book of the year. He exhibits all over the world and his books have been translated and published in many editions abroad. He graduated from the Secondary School of Applied Arts in 1980. 

KAREL KACHYŇA

A native of Vyškov, he is a director, screenwriter, cameraman, teacher at FAMU, one of the most outstanding personalities of Czech feature film. He graduated from the Baťa´s School of Art after the war. He entered the Czech cinematography in the 1950s. In the 1960s, his collaboration with the writer Jan Procházka resulted in a number of film gems – Kočár do Vídne (A Carriage to Vienna), Noc nevěsty (The Bride's Night) or Ucho (Ear). Even many of his later films belong to the best Czech and Czechoslovakian films ever. In 1995, Karel Kachyňa received the Czech Lion award for his long-term artistic contribution to Czech cinema and in 1999 he received the prize for long-term contribution to world filmography at the Karlovy Vary IFF. He died in 2004.
